Storm Drain Cleaning in Los Cerritos: what actually fails

Large Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean lots near the Virginia Country Club have long driveways, courtyards and planted beds that shed soil and leaves into drains. More paving and more garden slope often means several basins per property, with silt cleared along with the leaves.

Large Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean-style homes mark Los Cerritos, a historic Long Beach district and an established, older neighborhood close to the Virginia Country Club.

Where the blockage sits moves the price. A branch inside a large house may be a typical $170 to $350 single-fixture clearing, while the lateral outside is main-line work at $400 to $800, and a camera at $175 to $450 settles which it is.

  • Whether the blockage is inside the house or in the lateral
  • How long the interior branch is to the main
  • Original clay or cast iron outside the walls
  • Roots at separated joints in the lateral

How it works

From first call to finished

We ask which part of town and roughly what year first, because here that changes the answer.

The cheap answers first

If it is one slow fixture, we will tell you what to try before we come out — a plunger with the overflow blocked, or a hand snake past the trap.

Clear it, then say whether it will recur

On an old lateral a clearing is an interval and you are entitled to know roughly how long. On a newer line an object came out and the line is fine.

Tell us the neighborhood and roughly…

It is the single most informative thing you can say about a drain in this city.

While you wait

What to do before anybody arrives

  1. Is this a one-off or an interval? The most useful sentence a drain company can say, and the one most of them avoid. On newer pipe an object came out and it is done; on old clay you have bought time, and you are entitled to know roughly how much.
  2. Will they tell you when you do not need them?A hand snake solves a great many bath and shower drains. Somebody willing to say so is giving advice against their own immediate interest.
  3. Did they ask where the property is and how old it is?If a price arrives before those questions do, it is a guess. In a city that runs from canal-side lots to 1920s bungalow courts to new downtown towers, a company that does not ask is right about half the time by luck.

What is the difference between a storm drain and a sewer line?

They are separate systems. The sewer line carries wastewater from sinks, toilets and showers away from the house. Storm drains, meaning catch basins, curb drains and yard drains, carry rain and surface runoff off the property. Clearing one will not fix a problem in the other, so we confirm which one first.

Who is responsible for the sewer line, me or the city?

Generally the property owner is responsible for the lateral from the building to its connection with the city main, and the city looks after the main in the street. If you are unsure where the line changes hands, the city can confirm it for your address.

Is drain cleaning necessary?

It depends on the property, not the city. On an early-1900s clay or cast-iron lateral under mature trees it can be the most useful money you spend, because roots and scale return. On a 1960s slab-tract line that has never blocked, a camera inspection is worth more than a cleaning, and on a newer line there may be nothing to remove.

How do I find out what my drain pipe is made of?

Start with the age of the building and the look of the cleanout, the capped pipe at or near ground level outside. Clay, cast iron, ABS and PVC look and feel quite different. If that leaves it unclear, one camera run settles it and the answer stays true for as long as you own the property.
